Want to see Barrow?

Barrow, Alaska is a place I've wanted to visit for a long time. I'm hoping to go there this year, and hopefully take a very short swim in the Arctic Ocean if it is thawed! This picture is a view of Barrow from the frozen ocean. I have included a link to a web cam I found that shows the current weather conditions in Barrow, and the ice covering the ocean. I will keep checking it to see when the ice moves away from shore, then plan a trip to take a dip! (Like my poem?) It's also interesting to note the day light, or darkness. Something new I learned is that even on the longest day of winter, it still gets light there for a couple of hours. I always thought they were in total darkness all winter, but even though the sun doesn't rise above the horizon, the rays still create some light. I saw this on the web cam picture. I find the Arctic fascinating! Here's the link: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/snowice/sea-lake-ice/barrow_webcam.html

When I was there in 1972 at Thanksgiving, the brightest part of the day was not light enough to take pictures with my Instamatic camera and I have several very dark pictures of scenery and Eskimos to prove it. I'm very glad I went! Hope you can go !

You should make sure someone takes pictures of you swimming in the Arctic Ocean! It looks pretty cold, you are brave!

Yes, I will definately take a picture! I could even get an "offical" certificate if I pay $10 and join the polar bear club. A lady that owns a restaurant provides this service. She watches to be sure you go all the way under! Sounds like a tourist trap to me, but it probably is one of the cheaper souvaniers!

Brrrr...My step-dad worked up there for awhile and they had to make sure they kept the doors closed tight otherwise the Polar bears would welcome themselves in.
